Dubai World Cup Preview

Mar 30 2012

MASTER OF HOUNDS (SAF) C Soumillon
Loves this course and definite chance at odds. Second in last year’s G2 UAE Derby here and won the G1 Jebel Hatta over 1800m here last time out. This race is ideal.

EISHIN FLASH (JP) C Lemaire
Struggled in the past 2 Japan Cups but looks better suited now at the 2000m. Hasn’t won since the 2010 Japanese Derby but has worked a treat in Dubai. Query runner, place.

ZAZOU (GER) O Peslier
G1 winner of the Premio Roma in Italy last year and ran third to California Memory in the G1 Hong Kong Cup in December. That’s good form for this race, respect.

SO YOU THINK (IRE) J O'Brien
Former Australian superstar who has proven himself a world-class performer with three G1 wins last year. Can be excused for his past 2 unplaced runs in the Arc De Triomphe and Breeders Cup in what appeared to be “afterthought” races on a very long campaign. This is his distance, he’s the best horse in the race and the one to beat.

SMART FALCON (JP) Y Take
Japanese sensation who’s won his past 9 starts, usually by big margins. Won his last one by 9 lengths at Ohi and has a great jockey on board. Absolute wildcard but should handle the surface and must be highly rated.

PLANTEUR (UK) R Moore
Winner of last year’s G1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp but has struggled recently. Only eighth in the G1 Prix du Moulin before spelling. Would need to have improved with the break.

ROYAL DELTA (USA) J Lezcano
Dual G1 winner who won last year’s Breeders Cup Ladies Classic over 1800m at Churchill Downs. Has won at this trip and she’s a class mare with a big chance.

MONTEROSSO (UAE) M Barzalona
Intriguing runner. Favourite when fourth in the 2010 Irish Derby and third at big odds in this race last year. Well held in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge last start but he’s a Royal Ascot winner who can pull out a big run. Place.

SILVER POND (UAE) J Murtagh
Has won 2 French G2s and was third in the G1 Hong Kong Vase and second in the Al Maktoum Challenge. Chance at odds.

TRANSCEND (JP) S Fujita
Dual G1 Japan Cup Dirt winner and second in this race last year. Failed as favourite in the G1 February Stakes over the Tokyo 1600m but better over 2000m. Chance with his own way in front.

CAPPONI (IRE) A Ajtebi
Has won his past 2 here including the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge. Improving type who must be a chance at good odds.

PRINCE BISHOP (UAE) L Dettori
Failed in this race last year but has improved this campaign with a win and placing from 3 Meydan runs. Third in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge over this course and distance but place looks best in this field.

MENDIP (USA) S De Sousa
Has won 5 times at this track but failed in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge and only sixth in last year’s Dubai Duty Free. Probably out of his class in this but might be a place chance.

GAME ON DUDE (USA) C Sutherland
Class US galloper who has won a G1 and G2 race at Santa Anita either side of second to Drosselmeyer in last year’s G1 Breeders Cup Classic. If he’s settled in and all is on track as his trainer Bob Baffert recovers from a heart attack, he’s a definite chance.

Shane McNally’s selections:

7 Royal Delta
4 So You Think
1 Haster Of Hounds
14 Game On Dude
