Parnham guides Voodoo Lad to Caulfield win

MELBOURNE Aug 13 2016

Chris Parnham has been fined $300 for a celebratory gesture in winning a stakes race at Caulfield.

Wins in the city have been lean for Parnham in recent months, and he was escatic to win the Listed Regal Roller Stakes aboard Voodoo Lad on Saturday.

Parnham said he'd endured a tough time, with three suspensions from stewards in the past five weeks.

That followed him spending three months out of the saddle with a broken leg earlier in the year.

A heavily backed $2.90 favourite, Voodoo Lad scored a 2-1/4 length victory over Jungle Edge ($21), with Fast 'N' Rocking ($4) a half-head away in third.

The victory of Voodoo Lad brought up a winning double for leading trainer Darren Weir, who earlier scored with Kaniana in the Legacy 2016 Badge Appeal Handicap.

It came on top of a career-best five winners at Flemington last week.

Weir said a Casterton trial last Monday had been instrumental in Voodoo Lad's victory.

"He had a trial on Monday and we dropped him out the back and just let him rip the over last 300 metres," he said.

"He's a lovely horse to train down the beach, but we don't gallop him a lot and keep him on the fresh side.

"The trial on Monday fitted him perfectly for today."
