Weekend Greyhound Previews

 Mar 9 2018

This Friday night, Richmond in Sydney is the place to go for Group greyhound racing, with the finals of the Group 2 Richmond Derby and the Group 2 Richmond Oaks.

Both races are worth $40,000 (each) to the winner.

The Derby decider is race 6 (8.58pm) and looks a very open affair, with local chaser Two Times Twice carrying plenty of support. The fastest qualifier (from box 8 in 30.48) is chasing a hat trick of wins and is well boxed again in the 7.

Aston Duke for Jason Mackay is also well boxed in the 1 and could get the fly with Aston Frankel (2) a moderate beginner. Aston Duke ran 5.28 to the first mark in the heats at his first run at Richmond, before clocking 30.64.

Victorian Hone In is flying at the minute and stays in the white rug after winning his heat in 30.82 from a gallant Maurice Minor, who is fantastic each way value. He's very strong but just needs to step more cleanly.

The Group 2 Richmond Oaks is race 8 (at 9.38pm) and (in what is a 'gun' line up) Victorian Up Hill Jill (3) is boxed to lead and go one-better than her runner's up cheque last year.

The Top Gun winner finished 2nd to Blue Sky Riot in the Oaks heats from box 5 in 30.60.

Blue Sky Riot moves from box 2 to the 8 and has never drawn wider than 6. She set the time standard with 30.44 and, despite being extremely classy, will need luck to cross the field.

Miss Splendarimo (7) comes into the final in a rich vein of form after winning her heat in 30.46 from box 5, after winning the Bathurst Gold Cup and clocking 29. 83 at Wentworth Park.

Little Nangar (4) and My Country (5) also have great early toe and can certainly taste victory, as can Chase The Cash (6), who is very strong.

The Oaks promises to be a race for the ages.

In what is a tremendous card at Richmond, the Frank Kennedy Memorial (race 4 - named in honour of the legendary greyhound racing media man, and father of Terry Kennedy) and the John McCombe Memorial (race 7) are excellent supporting features.

Saturday night's feature meeting is in Horsham in western Victoria, with the $47,000 to-the-winner Group 2  Horsham Cup race 8 on the card.

Tiempo Dinero (box 4) qualified fastest in 27.06 and is 2 from 2 at Horsham, but will have to ping the lids again from a tough draw.

TAB Melbourne Cup champ Aston Dee Bee was brilliant in the heats, winning in 27.09 from box 3 and will jump from the 8 in the decider. He is an absolute superstar and has won 4 from the pink.

Trainer Seona Thompson has a big chance to quinella the Cup, with Aston Dee Bee and 2-time Group 1 victor Out Of Range , who is well drawn in box 2.

Winner of the Silver Chief and the National Derby, he finished second in the fastest heat and only needs early room to take it out.

Jimmy Newob draws the 1 for the 5th race in a row and was a brilliant heat winner, leading all the way in 27.29.

Runner-up to Ritza Lenny in the Cyril Rowe Gold Cup at Bulli the previous start, he's drawn to be on the arm again.

The Group 2 Horsham Cup will be run at 9.20 on Saturday night.
