Doomben 10,000 preview

 May 22 2015

The Doomben 10,000 is regarded as Doomben's signature race. It has been won by some champions of the turf, Apache Cat won it twice 08 & 09, Takeover Target in 07 and don't forget the NT terror, Undue in 06.

Queensland's own champion Bernborough won it in 1946 carrying 65.5 and then went on to win the Doomben Cup in the same week- still the only horse to accomplish the remarkable feat.

This years field looks to have some polish on it too! We were all left cringing after the Cairon Maher trained Srikandi jumped in the air at the start in the BTC Cup two weeks ago. Although she looked to to end up in a fair position after that tardy start, you just don't know the effect physiologically on a horse when they are out of their comfort zone. She had never raced back in the field before. I would have loved to see her finish off a bit better but that was not the case.

Our Boy Malichi suffered a rare thing for him- defeat, but was bold in doing so and will no doubt possie up in a forward spot again this week. Races are never easy at this level as he found out.

Scissor Kick would not surprise as he too was slow out in the BTC Cup but closed off well. He is a lovely 3YO Redoute's Choice colt who is delving deep to find that elusive Group 1.

The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 is set to jump at 3:57pm (AEST). Check out the full market here.

Knoydart for team Godolphin is knocking on the door and did the best of these in the BTC Cup finishing second behind Hot Snitzel. His work looked very strong on the course proper on Tuesday morning when he galloped with stablemate Sarajevo (who is this in the Fred Best).

Charlie Boy who hails from the Snowden team was a strong winner in the BRC sprint two weeks ago at the same distance and seems to have a sense of timing about him. With a tricky draw this week he will need a great ride by Blake Shinn but that doesn't seem hard to get of late!

To be honest this is a very open race this year and with a capacity field, luck in running will have a lot to say, but I shall stick with the candy girl- Srikandi.
