Hume Cup Preview

 Nov 3 2014

Melbourne Cup eve comes alive at The Meadows on Monday night, with the running of the $75,000 to the winner, Group 1 Hume Cup over 600 metres. The race was first run in 1960, over 675 yards at the old North Melbourne track and was won last year by the Kelly Bravo trained Alpe D'Huez.

Superstar-in-the-making My Bro Fabio is the $1.90 favourite with Fixed Odds to notch his first Group 1 success in this year's renewal and that price could very well be 'money for jam', with the Brooke Ennis trained son of Turanza Bale and Flamenco clocking a flying 34.12 in the heats at his return to the middle-distance.

Check out the full market for the Group 1 Hume Cup here.

My Bro Fabio, who is beautifully drawn in box 2 in the Hume Cup final, has won 6 of his past 7 starts, including victory in the Canberra Cup, where he annihilated his opponents by more than 10 lengths. Considered by many unlucky not to be granted a start in the SKY Racing Topgun last weekend, the black chaser is my clear top pick to continue on his winning ways.

Kennel mate Oscura ($9.50 Fixed) who won his heat in 34.51 will start from box 4, while My Bro Fabio's litter mate Warrior King will give the Ennis kennel 3 runners, following the scratching of Know Class. The first reserve ($9 Fixed) will jump from box 5 after finishing second to Eliza Blanche in the heats in 34.56.

The Group 1 Hume Cup is set to jump at 9:38pm (AEDT). Tune in to Sky Racing for comprehensive coverage!

Eliza Blanche ($6 Fixed) is trained by Darren McDonald and produced a sensational run in the heats, coming from a seemingly impossible position to win in 34.19, with a run home of 12.24.The daughter of Radley Bale boasts a lethal strike rate at the Meadows, winning 6 of 8 starts there and looks a mighty quinella bet with My Bro Fabio.

Second favourite is the Steve McKenna conditioned Deadly Boy ($4.50 Fixed), who has won 4 of his past 6 starts. Jumping from box 5 in the heats, he led all of the way, clocking 34.22 and moves to the green rug in the final, where he has tasted success on 2 occasions. He must be respected.

Flying Twist ($7.50 Fixed) from the Andrea Dailly kennel also must be kept extremely safe, after finishing second to My Bro Fabio in the heats, in 34.42. The daughter of Velocette and Valley Twist will exit from box 3.

My selections for the Group 1 Hume Cup final are My Bro Fabio from Eliza Blanche, Flying Twist and Deadly Boy.

Monday's night's other feature is the Group 3 Silver Bullet (525 metres), with Geelong Cup winner Luca Neveelk ($1.60 Fixed Odds) drawing box 1.

Catch all the action live on Sky Racing 1 or get to the track, which features excellent patron facilities and giveaways, including white goods and children's bikes.
